Intent

At Herne, we want to foster a deep love of learning and our aim in Music is to allow creativity and individualistic ideas to flourish. Our intent is to provide an engaging, relevant, practical and ambitious four-year learning journey, built on prior learning which focuses on the key progression of skills set out in the National Curriculum. We use Hampshire Music to guide our journey where we link the dimensions and skills of Music across our themes, allowing the children to perform, listen to and review. Our strategies and mediums used throughout the journey are diverse, providing them with opportunities and experiences beyond what is traditionally expected. By doing so, we aim to prepare them for a world where technology, access and production of Music are ever changing.

Implementation

At Herne Junior School our Music Curriculum, based on an effective programme of study, utilises the expertise of Hampshire Music and Listen to Me, (as well as other external agencies) to support the teaching of meaningful lessons, which allow children to progress regardless of their stage, or musical background (knowing every child).

Each term a combination of skills are taught in discrete units, by either teachers or external agencies. In each year group at least one of these units is linked to our thematic approach to the curriculum. Additionally, Music taught by “Listen to Me” provides every child in the school the opportunity to learn an instrument (Ukulele) through direct, specialist lessons. Further Instrumental skills are gained through the use of glockenspiels throughout the school. As a result, the children are engaged, excited and inspired (Inspiring Every Mind) to learn and in turn remember what they have been taught.

Further to this, children across the whole school have the option to learn a classical musical instrument from a peripatetic, specialist teacher in small group and one to one sessions. PP We promote the love of singing in our school through singing assemblies, services and our choir, (which is open to all children across the school). Through singing performances, we have helped nurture a love and appreciation for the local community, taking part and supporting local businesses and events. These include the annual Petersfield Music Festival, performing Christmas Carols at Care Homes, Christmas Market and the Turning on of the Christmas Lights. Other events include performances for the Salvation Army, Remembrance Day and school fayres.

Music is a subject that all children can access, regardless of their prior experience and by teaching a range of skills from “listening and responding” to, “composition”, all children can feel they have achieved (Achieving Every Day), which it turn helps them to build resilience and enjoyment.

Throughout our musical journey, our children are encouraged to work collaboratively through the teaching of the key skills, helping them to develop and build vital skills needed for the outside world.

Our School’s access to many mediums of Music, which include digital (iPad apps, computer software) and traditional, experimental and world instruments, allow the children to access Music on many levels that in turn help to foster motivated and independent learners.

Impact

Once their time at Herne ends the children will be equipped with lifelong skills, knowledge and an enthusiasm for Music study that will prepare them for their next stage of education.

They will leave Herne with an increased knowledge of the wider world of Music. Through the study of Composers throughout history, musical workshops, instrumental lessons, the ability to compose Music using a range of mediums, singing and taking part in local community events, the children will leave Herne Junior School more confident, proficient and carry with them a life-long love of Music.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”
